MOTHER’S DAY
HISTORY
Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of
ancient Greek and Romans.
Earliest
History of Mothers Day
The earliest
history of Mothers Day dates back to
the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses.
The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother
of many deities of Greek mythology.
Ancient Romans,
too, celebrated a spring festival, called “Hilaria” dedicated to “Cybele”,
a mother goddess. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings
in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and
masquerades.
Early Christians
celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of
Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday
was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called “Mothering
Sunday”.
However, the
celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not
even a hundred years old. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated
across 46 countries (though on different dates). In Mexico, it is celebrated on
May the 10th and it is a special event everywhere; all families
happily joined together to honor their mothers. It has become a hugely popular
celebration..
Millions of
people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers,
thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them, and being their
constant support and well-wisher.

HISTORIA DEL DIA DE LAS MADRES
El origen del día de las madres data desde la
era de los antiguos Romanos y Griegos.
La historia más reciente del “Día de las Madres” se relaciona con un festival anual de primavera que los griegos
dedicaban a las diosas madres. Los griegos aprovecharon la ocasión para honrar
a Rhea,
esposa de Cronus y a la madre de muchas deidades de la mitología griega.
Los
antiguos romanos también celebraron un festival de primavera llamado “Hilaria”,
dedicado a Cybele, la diosa madre.. La celebración se realizaba el 15 de
Marzo presentando ofrendas en el templo de Cybele que duraba 3 días y era
representado por medio de desfiles, juegos y baile de disfraces.
Los cristianos celebraron el Día de
las Madres el 4to domingo durante las festividades de cuaresma, en honor a la
virgen María, la madre de Cristo. En Inglaterra el día de fiesta se hizo
extensivo al reconocer a todas las madres en un solo día. Fue llamado el
Domingo del Día de la Madre (Mothering
Sunday).
Sin embargo, la celebración de este día como
se ve hoy, es un fenómeno reciente y no de cientos de años atrás. Ahora el
festival del día de las Madres se festeja en 46 países (aunque en fechas
distintas). En México se festeja el 10 de Mayo y es un evento único en todas
partes, las familias se reúnen con mucho entusiasmo para festejar a sus madres.
Se ha convertido en una gran celebración popular.
Miles de personas en todo el mundo aprovechan
el día como una oportunidad de agradecerles todo su esfuerzo al darles la vida,
educarlos, ser un apoyo firme y constante y con bellas intenciones. A
todas las madres en su día:
Si contara con una flor
Para cada ocasión
Pensaría en mi madre
Y Podría caminar
En mi jardín por siempre
